Setting Up Your New IP Phone
John Scarborough: Setting up your new phone is easy. Fundamentally, think of your IP phone more like it’s a computer than a phone or it looks like a phone and it acts like a phone and has dials on it like a phone. It’s really more like a computer. More than likely, you’ve purchased the state-of-the-art Polycom HD or high definition 550 or 650 IP phone. These phones are the highest quality high definition phones available on the market today.
Once you’ve pulled your phone out of the box, take a look at the back of it. You’ll see DC power plus four ports. There’s a LAN port, a computer port, a port for the handset and a port for the headset.
Take the standard CAT-5 or higher Ethernet cord from your LAN and connect it into the LAN port on the back of your IP phone. Then connect your computer to the PC port. And finally, if you’re using one of our supported headsets, connect it to the headset port. In the meantime, I’ll connect the handset. Connect your power.
Once you’ve made these connections, attach the base to the phone by lining up the lip of the base or the flange on the back of the phone and then click it into place. From here, your phone will begin its boot-up process. Just like I said, these phones are really more like computers. Initial download and configuration may take up to 15 minutes so please be patient.
You will know your configuration is complete when your phone display shows the current date and time. If your phone does not boot up, please check the FAQs for the troubleshooting checklist as you may be experiencing a problem within your local area network or broadband connection. If the phone still doesn’t boot up though, please call us at 303-800-0000, option 2 for technical support.
By the way, should you ever experience trouble with your phone just like your PC, to reboot by unplugging the power of your phone and plug it back in again which will reboot it. It’s really as easy as that. Now, you’re ready to go. Welcome to the world of VoIP.
